  1. punishing or torturing sin
  2. subjugating and destroying sin or vice
  3. a kind of penance in which the recitation of the Ŗgvedic mantra of the same name is prescribed, and which prescribes fasting for 3 days, and remaining standing throughout the day hours and seated throughout the night, and the donating of a milking cow at the end of the period (M. Sańhitā).
