Anārya literally means ‘non-Ārya’.
- not noble, not refined.
- ignoble, not honourable.
- a term used in Sanskrit texts (almost always derogatory) to refer to the tribes, clans and societies outside the pale of the society that followed the Vedic tradition and culture and belonged to the Ārya, or Sanskrit speaking group.
