Sometimes transliterated as: Gupta-godavari, Gupta-godAvarI, Gupta-godaavari

Gupta-godāvarī literally means ‘the hidden Godāvarī’.

Nearly 10 kms. (6 miles) from the Atri-Anasuyā Āśrama of Citrakuṭa in Uttar Pradesh, there is a dark cave. About 15 meters (50 ft.) inside this cave, there is a pond called ‘Sītākuṇḍa’. Water streams constantly fall into this pond. Pilgrims consider taking bath here equal to a bath in the sacred river Godāvarī. Hence it is named as ‘Gupta-godāvarī’.
