Hrim

From Hindupedia, the Hindu Encyclopedia

By Swami Harshananda

Mantras recommended for japa and meditation usually include a bījamantra or seed-letter. It contains the form and the power of the deity of that mantra. ‘Hrīm’ is the well-known bīja assigned to the goddess Soḍaśī, an aspect of Pārvatī.

Hrim is also one of the niyamas prescribed by Layayoga. It is interpreted as the notion of being ashamed (hrī = sense of shame) of all the actions opposed to yoga described by the scriptures.
