Princess Sāvitrī has been highly eulogized in the mythological lore as an ideal wife. She is the very personification of wifely virtues like chastity and singular devotion towards the husband. Satyavān was her fortunate husband.

Dyumatsena, the king of the Śālva country, was his father. Though he was devoted to dharma and ruled well, he lost his eyesight and was conquered by a rival king who drove him out of his kingdom. He lived in a forest along with his wife and son Satyavān. Princess Sāvitrī chose to marry Satyavān, even though she was apprised that he would die very soon. Dyumatsena regained his eyesight and kingdom due to Sāvitrī’s prayer to Yama, the god of death.
