Foundation[edit]

The Sanskrit Academy of Madras[1] started in A. D. 1927. It started in the Senate Hall of the Old Senate building of the University of Madras by Paṇḍit Madan Mohan Mālavīya.[2] The well-known savant Kuppusvāmi Sāstri[3] was chosen as the first president.

Contributions[edit]

It is still housed in the campus of the University of Madras its various objectives and activities includes:

  • Research in Sanskrit publishing a Sanskrit Journal[4]
  • Publicizing critical editions of important Sanskrit works
  • Honoring Sanskrit scholars by awarding fellowships and diplomas
  • Creating an Oriental Public Library
  • Organizing periodical conferences of paṇḍits
  • Conducting competitions in Sanskrit literary activities
  • Enacting Sanskrit dramas
  • Arrangements for teaching spoken Sanskrit

Achievements[edit]

  • It is also conducting free Sanskrit classes and awarding scholarships to deserving students studying Sanskrit.
  • It has successfully celebrated Silver Jubilee,[5] Golden Jubilee[6] and Diamond jubilee[7] with various programs.
  • It has brought out twenty books and monographs to popularize Sanskrit.
  • The academy has been quite active not only in propagating Sanskrit but also in opposing anti-Sanskrit policies or movements especially in Tamil Nadu.
