Talk:Svāhā

From Hindupedia, the Hindu Encyclopedia

By Swami Harshananda

Svāhā literally means ‘that by which gods are invited’.

Svāhā or Svāhādevī is the śakti[1] of Agni.[2] She is one of the daughters of Dakṣa-Prajāpati. Agni gets the power to digest the offerings made to him in sacrifices from her and then carry them to the various deities for whom it is meant. That is why all such offerings should be made with the utterance of the mantra ‘svāhā’.
