Upaveda literally means ‘subsidiary Veda’.

The word ‘veda’ means knowledge of a particular science. Certain subsidiary fields of knowledge which also go by the title “Veda" are considered very important for the development of the human society. The are:

  1. Āyurveda - science of life or health
  2. Dhanurveda - science of war
  3. Gāndharva- veda - science of music
  4. Sastraśāstra - science of weapons

These four are said to be associated respectively with the four well-known Vedas which are:

  1. Ṛgveda
  2. Yajurveda
  3. Sāmaveda
  4. Atharvaveda
