Upastaraṇa

From Hindupedia, the Hindu Encyclopedia

By Swami Harshananda

Upastaraṇa literally means ‘act of spreading’.

In some Vedic sacrifices, rice-cakes called puroḍāśa are used for offering into the consecrated fire. Ājya or ghee is spread below these puroḍāśa cakes before they are cut. This act of spreading is called upastaraṇa.

In Somayāgas, a little soma juice is put into the camasas[1] before filling them. This is also called upastaraṇa.
